It also won an Oscar for John Ford's direction, his fourth such award. The film was a deeply personal project for Ford (whose birth name was Sean Aloysius O'Fearna), and he lavished all of his affection for the Irish landscape and Irish people on this film. He also stages perhaps the greatest donnybrook in the history of movies, an epic fistfight between Wayne and the truculent Victor McLaglen--that's Ford's brother, Francis, as the elderly man on his deathbed who miraculously revives when he hears word of the dustup. Barry Fitzgerald, the original Irish elf, gets the movie's biggest laugh when he walks into the newlyweds' bedroom the morning after their wedding, and spots a broken bed. The look on his face says everything. The Quiet Man isn't the real Ireland, but as a delicious never-never land of Ford's imagination, it will do very nicely. --Robert Horton

Based on the manga by Nozomu Tamaki, the broadcast series Dance in the Vampire Bund (2010) centers on a vampire realm that exists in parallel to everyday life. Akira, a normal-seeming high-school student suffering from amnesia, goes about ordinary activities with his classmate Yuki at an elite private academy in Tokyo. Their world changes when Mina Tepes, a descendant of Vlad the Impaler and the reigning princess of the vampire world, arrives at their school. In the first story, she connives to build a settlement dubbed the Vampire Bund on a Tokyo Bay landfill--and claims extraterritoriality for it, as if it were a 19th-century European colony. The subsequent plots--which start and stop arbitrarily--string together violent battles between various villains and Akira, who discovers he's both a werewolf and the sworn servant/protector of the Princess. There are lots of fan-service jiggle shots, but Princess Mina takes the form of a barely pubescent girl, which gives much of the nudity disquieting "lolicon" overtones. Other story elements include an attack on students seeking safety in a church, an assault on a buxom nun, a high-school student's apparently passionate attachment to an elementary-school boy, and "Agni Blood" ("Blood of the Lamb"), a chemical rebel vampires use to turn themselves into walking bombs. Despite all the violence and nudity, Vampire Bund is a crashing bore with long Morris the Explainer scenes. Otaku will recognize the many elements the series borrows from other anime. As Rumiko Takahashi's "Feudal Fairy Tale" continues, the main storyline about recapturing the fragments of the Shikkon Jewel recedes and shorter adventures come to the fore. At the end of season 3, Inu-Yasha destroyed the magical barrier protecting his enemy Naraku: the evil demon fled, leaving no trail. Naraku's absence allows dozens of minor demons to emerge from hiding and cause problems that Kagome, Sango, Miroku, Shippo, and Inu-Yasha must undo. An eccentric exorcist tangles with Miroku and the imprisoned spirit of a lovely princess; the demon Orchidayu creates fake Shikkon Jewels in an effort to strengthen his servants. Some of the adventures take a comic turn. When Kagome's younger brother develops his first crush on a classmate, he asks Inu-Yasha's advice about how to approach the girl. (Asking the terminally insensitive Inu-Yasha for romantic advice is about as sensible as asking a vegetarian how to cook a pot roast.) A shape-shifting raccoon spirit impersonates Miroku so accurately, he gets the lecherous monk in trouble with the women of two villages. By this point, the characters in Inu-Yasha have become so familiar, their antics feel entertaining even when they don't really advance the plot. A taut series filled with drama as well as great chemistry between its two lead stars, Bones is a strong addition to Fox's television lineup. Debuting in 2005 to favorable critical reviews, the series shares an audience of fans with the CSI franchise. Smartly written and well-acted, the first season of Bones focuses on the collaborations between FBI special agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz, Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel), whom Booth somewhat sarcastically nicknames "Bones." Each of the 22 episodes follows a premise well-known to regular viewers of crime dramas--a murder has been committed and a body found. The team's job is to figure out who the victim is, how he or she was killed, and how it was done; that part doesn't differ from other shows on television. What sets the show apart is the humor injected into the episodes (Boreanaz is particularly good at delivering wry lines). There's some wicked humor in the episode focusing on Brennan's attempts at dating, which is nicely offset by the horrific crimes she has to deal with. And for a show with such attractive leads, Bones doesn't make a huge point of dwelling on any possible attraction between the pair. Rather, it takes advantage of their playful bantering, which is more akin to that of bickering siblings than repressed lovers--for this season, anyhow. The series is inspired by real-life forensic anthropologist and author Kathy Reichs (who stars in one of the featurettes on the four-disc set). In a nice play on art imitating reality, Kathy Reichs also is the name of the heroine in the murder mysteries that Dr. Brennan writes on the side. By the end of the season, viewers will learn enough about the characters to care, but not enough to completely understand why they are the way they are. That is an ongoing mystery. --Jae-Ha Kim
